Description
It is often referred to as the “Golden Pillow,” is one of the most popular and widely cultivated durian varieties, especially in Thailand. This medium to large variety typically weighs between 2 to 4 kilograms and is recognized for its oblong to slightly heart-shaped appearance. The fruit features a thick, pale green to golden-yellow husk covered with moderately spaced, short, triangular spikes. A sturdy, fibrous stem is attached, providing support for its weight.
Inside, the flesh is a rich golden-yellow, known for its thick, creamy, and smooth texture. The flesh surrounds small to medium-sized seeds, making it a highly sought-after variety for its abundant edible portion. Monthong durian is celebrated for its sweet flavor with subtle hints of vanilla and almond, along with a mild bitterness that balances the sweetness.
Compared to other durian varieties, Monthong has a less pungent aroma, making it more approachable for those new to durian. The fruit is often harvested from May to August and is prized for its ability to be stored and exported due to its relatively thick husk and long shelf life. It’s commonly enjoyed fresh or used in desserts, snacks, and even savory dishes.
